Welcome to Year Five

Welcome to Year Five’s Page

Year Five is taught by Mrs Perry with support from Mrs Bromley.

In Year Five this term:

Throughout this term we will be reading a range of fiction, nonfiction and poetry, as well as writing for a range of audiences and purposes.

In Real Reading we will be improving our comprehension skills of inference and deduction and working on adding extra detail to our written answers about what we have read.

In writing we are looking at writing a newspaper report and an interview while understanding about where to put a range of clauses in a sentence.

Please listen to your child read daily and sign or make a comment in their reading diary. In preparation for Year 6 and SATs, please encourage them to read a range of challenging texts. This can be their book from school or home.

In Maths we are investigating shape, describing the properties of 3D shapes, finding out about polygons and learning how shapes translate on a grid. We are also finding out about position and direction.

We are continuing to learn about fractions, decimals and percentages in more detail and solving problems involving measures with emphasis on multiplication and division.

We will be answering reasoning style questions, explaining how we solved the problems and why we know our answers are correct.

Our topics this term are ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘It’s a matter of opinion’. We will be working together to find out about how a business is run and the different positions within a company.

We will learn about skills such as budgeting, designing and advertising for a new product.

All of our topics in school are based on our school values and linked to the themes of persevering and being truthful.

After half term we will learn about how important our opinions are and how we can put our point of view across while still listening to the views of others and being respectful to opinions that may not be the same as ours.

Throughout this term the children will be studying living things, and their habitats, including, plants, humans and animals.

Physical Education

P.E. will be on a Friday. Please ensure that your child has suitable clothing in school on this day for indoor and outdoor P.E.

Religious Education

In R.E., the children are looking at caring for others, animals and the environment as well as learning about participating and being willing to lead. After half term they are finding out about being honest, open and truthful.
