We are: respectful, responsible, hopeful, friendly, truthful and we persevere.

Welcome to Year Six

Welcome to Year Six's page

Year Six is taught by Mrs Higgins and Mrs Shioleftou with support from Miss Charlton, Miss Graham and Mrs Whyatt.

In Year Six this term:

Throughout this term we will be busy reading a range of fiction, nonfiction and poetry, as well as writing for a range of audiences and purposes. We will continue to work at pace so the children can produce a range of writing evidencing to show what they are capable of for the end of key stage teacher assessments. In key skills, we will be revising all aspects of grammar, vocabulary, spellings and punctuation.

As we prepare for our end of key stage performance, we will be using our speaking, listening, singing and drama skills to the maximum!

Please listen to your child read daily and sign or make a comment in their reading diary. In preparation for SATs and secondary school, please encourage them to read a range of challenging text. This can be their book from school or home.

Our focus for this term is on using our number skills to solve a range of problems, which will include ratio, percentages and interpreting tables and graphs.

Our SATs preparations continue with lots of opportunities to practise the skills that the children have learnt and use them in new ways, as well as being able to explain ourselves clearly, using correct mathematical language.

Homework will be set each Friday, either using Studyzone or tasks sent home from school. Please support your children to complete this homework and to return it to school where appropriate. The books we sent home will help you to support your children with this.

Our topics this term are ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘It’s a matter of opinion’. We will be working together in teams to develop our skills at budgeting, designing and advertising for our own products.

We will be starting each theme with a WOW activity, so please ask your child about these events!

All of our topics in school are based on our school values and linked to the themes of persevering and being truthful.

Throughout this term the children will be studying animals, including humans, and their habitats.

This will be taught by Miss Garratt and linked to our end of year trip to West Midlands Safari Park.

Physical Education

P.E. will be on a Monday or a Tuesday. Please ensure that your child has suitable clothing in school on these days for indoor and outdoor P.E.

Miss Garratt teaches this lesson to year 6.

Religious Education

In R.E., we are continuing to learn about other faiths and we are exploring being reflective and self critical. After the half term break, we are ‘Remembering Roots’.

General Information

This will be an extremely busy term! Miss Garratt will be teaching Monday and Tuesday afternoons, plus we have Mrs Whyatt and Mrs Graham who are a part of the year 6 team involved in preparing the children for their SATs tests and secondary transition. All children will be having additional booster work and adult led groups to support them in areas where it is needed and so that we can help them achieve their best. Following the SATs tests, we will continue to work hard to produce our evidence for writing. Spellings and homework are weekly so please encourage your child to complete the tasks set.
